Wolfgang Cancer Centre

The Wolfgang Cancer Centre provides two kinds of services

  • Chemotherapy Day Care
  • Radiotherapy Unit

Wolfgang Cancer Centre is located in the new 8-storey building of the Hospital (Block E). The ground breaking was performed by the Superior General of the Brothers of Mercy, Rev. Br. Peter Berg in July 2009. The construction commenced on 15th October 2011 and completed on 19th October 2012.

The Centre consists of 2 units, the Radiotherapy Unit (RTU) (lower ground) and the Chemotherapy Day Care (CDC) (ground). The CDC commenced operations on 18th March 2013, followed by the RTU which received its first patient on 26th March 2013.

Modern One-Stop Centre

For most patients, being diagnosed with cancer and living with it are the biggest challenges that they will ever face. They and their families need to know that they can access to modern technology for precise diagnosis and effective treatment. Wolfgang Cancer Centre is set up to be a complete and modern one-stop centre, fully equipped for both chemotherapy and radiotherapy to provide the best possible cure and care.

Vision

To provide a comprehensive, affordable and effective care to cancer patients.

Mission

  1. To provide cancer treatment of the highest standard and quality.
  2. To provide an integrated and holistic care for cancer patients.

Radiotherapy Unit

  • Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to deliver a precise radiation dose to an accurately defined tumour volume while simultaneously minimizing radiation to surrounding healthy organs.
  • Depending on the type of cancer, radiation therapy is administered either externally using a linear accelerator or internally, using brachytherapy.
  • The normal course of treatment is 5 days per week, varying from 1-7 weeks.
  • The treatment is painless and takes 10-20 minutes from set-up to completion.
  • The Radiotherapy Unit is a self-contained unit equipped with:

1. 32-slice CT Scan

To simulate patient for precise 3-dimensional planning
Has a large bore gantry which increases diagnostic anatomical coverage for optimal diagnosis and treatment.

2. Treatment Planning System

Comprehensive treatment planning system that simplifies modern radiation therapy planning for all kinds of treatment, including 3D conformal, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), electron, photon, and 3D brachytherapy

3. Linear Accelerator

To deliver external beam radiation treatment
Equipped with dual photon energies and five electron energies
Fitted with a 160 multileaf collimator (Agility), which offers high resolution beam shaping, seamless field delivery coupled with rapid leaf-speeds which allows for higher dose rates to be used for more effective modulation
Integrated with Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) technology using X-ray volume imaging (XVI) system, which provides a more accurate image verification in 3D

4. High Dose Rate 3D Brachytherapy System

To deliver localized radiation treatment directly into the body at the cancer site itself
Uses Iridium-192 as the source

Chemotherapy Day Care

  • Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses one or more anti-cancer drugs as part of a standardised chemotherapy regimen.
  • The Oncologist would determine the treatment cycles and what type of anti-cancer drugs to be used depending on patients’ condition and type of cancer.
  • Anti-cancer drugs are either given intravenously or orally.
  • The actual chemotherapy process is usually painless.
  • Patient can be discharged on the same day of treatment.
  • We also provide targeted therapy and immunotherapy for certain types of cancers.
  • The CDC is spacious and has 10 bays for therapy (8 recliner chairs and 2 beds)
  • The Day Care has a waiting lounge for relatives / friends.
  • Pastoral care services are available for patients.
